The Evolution of Mixed Martial Arts

Martial arts has been a lifestyle and art form for millions of people
for centuries. It caters to our natural instincts to survive, our
desire for combat and more importantly can guide a student with
values, respect and life lessons that only martial arts can provide.

There are hundreds of different fighting styles that have been
developed throughout history including karate, Brazilian jiu jitsu,
boxing, muay thai, krav maga and many more. This often leads to a
debate on which form is the superior martial art. Where has this
discussion taken us? To the evolution of mixed martial arts.

Mixed martial arts, also referred to as mma, has been on a fast rise
in recent years, solidifying itself as the world's fastest growing
sport. Competing in either a ring or cage, combatants face off in a
match that combines just about any fighting style you want to use. In
the vey early days it was likened to human cockfighting as the word
rules was almost non-existent. Today however there has been the
introduction of rules such as no knees or kicks to a downed opponent
that have shifted the sport in order to take it mainstream.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been the key driver of
mixed martial arts popularity around the world, spurred on by 'The
Ultimate Fighter' reality show which is nearing its 14th season.

As the sport continues to grow, mma gyms can be
found popping up everywhere and local events are becoming a more
regular occurrence. It is continuing to develop itself as its own
style, adapting from the forms that its competitors bring. As coaches
and fighters continue to innovate, the sport will always become more
and more exciting to watch.

Keep your eyes out for mixed martial arts events in your area and if
you haven't been to one, check it out!
